Commercial vehicles burnt down by Ladan Fuel tanker at Otedola Bridge

At about 1730hrs on Friday, the ladan fuel tanker fell and killed about 40 persons and also which involved some vehicles which causes them to explode according to some victim that were wounded they said that the tanker brakes failed crashed and exploded.

It was added that many commercial vehicles were also burnt down as a result of the tank explosion at Otedola Bridge in Lagos-Ibadan express way. And about sixty-seventy vehicles (1 tanker, 5 buses, 2 trucks, 1 tricycle, 45 cars gotten burnt down so for that many people were forced to walk on the other side of the road because of the incident that happened as traffic backed up throughout the city then later on the road was opened at about 7:45pm.

According to the first light that burnt out shells of the cars and also buses it was said to be moving towards the highway and was covered with ash for more than a kilometer half a mile, the authorizes reply by saying the initial crash was been cause by brake failure, and some ask why should a ladan fuel tanker allowed on the road at peak periods. The ladan fuel tanker was carrying about 36,000 litres (8,700 US gallons) of petrol at the same time.

Suleiman Yakubu from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said that the location was downhill stretch which drivers often take at speed and also the Lagos police spokesman named Chike Oti quoted in local media that some drivers driving lorries had been warned to put in all necessary safety checks before leaving so he said that the blame for this accident should be put on the driver and also to the owner of the vehicle. He concluded that some do not keep their vehicles in good condition. 

According to one of the roadside mechanic Dolarinwa Mufutau Bolarinwa said that he had the tank driver shouting “brake failure brake failure” and he said that he also saw a motorboy  trying to put a wedge to stop the tanker from rolling back. He told the Nigeria police force that the truck ran over the wedge backwards and immediately it fell there was a bang was cause the explosion and fire everywhere, and later he saw some people running away.
